The problem with SharePoint is that you will need to develop everything on a SharePoint server.

Everybody now uses virtual PCs for SharePoint development.

One of the questions that I get is what do I need to install in that VPC ?

So you will need to arm yourself with all this:

Windows Server 2003 R2 or Windows Server 2008

SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition or SQL Server 2005 Express

Microsoft .NET 3.5 Framework (minimum .NET 3.0)

WSS with SP2, MOSS with SP1 or Search Express 2008

Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 with SP1

WSS SDK v1.5 or MOSS SDK v1.5

Visual Studio 2008

VS extensions for SharePoint v1.2 for some projects and WSP builder for the rest.

Fire Fox

Fiddler

.NET Reflector and Resourcer

IE Developer Toolbar

SharePoint Manager 2007

U2U CAML Builder

Install all these on a VPC and Happy Coding!
